Double-Century-Old Ayurvedic Pure Copper Betel Casket (Tamra Pana Batta)
Archive Ref: GNMC-ART-062

Double-Century-Old Ayurvedic Pure Copper Betel Casket (Tamra Pana Batta)

Exceedingly rare early 19th-century monumental pure copper betel leaf keeper with architectural stupa-dome lid, turned spire finial, and lockable hasp clasp, historically used by aristocratic families to naturally preserve and potentiate paan (Dia 10 inches / 25.4 cm, Height 11 inches / 28 cm)
Extraordinary and monumental double-century-old (~200 years) authentic pure copper betel casket (known in Odia and Eastern Indian aristocratic tradition as Tamra Pana Batta, Pana Daba, or Tambula Peti), hand-forged circa early 19th century (~1820s) by master coppersmiths. In traditional rural and aristocratic society, affluent landed gentry and Ayurvedic practitioners insisted on keeping fresh betel leaves (paan) exclusively inside pure copper vessels. According to ancient Ayurvedic science (Charaka and Sushruta Samhitas), pure copper (Tamra) naturally releases trace antimicrobial ions into moist betel leaves, inhibiting fungal decay, maintaining crisp leaf turgor, and infusing the masticatory preparation with therapeutic digestive and blood-purifying properties (Tamra Guna). This imposing museum piece is hand-beaten from heavy gauge solid copper sheet, featuring a cylindrical lower drum base with reinforced rolled foot-rim and an architectural stupa/kalash-shaped domed lid culminating in an exquisite lathe-turned baluster spire finial. The front is fitted with an authentic hand-forged copper/bronze hasp latch anchored by palmette-scalloped backplates with an integral padlock staple loop, allowing the owner to secure rare aromatic ingredients such as ambergris, musk, camphor, cloves, and gold-leaf quids. Preserved in remarkable untouched antique condition, showcasing natural reddish-brown copper patination and authentic historic malachite-green verdigris encrustation.
