Archive Ref: GNMC-ART-059

Century-Old Squat Globular Heavy Brass Bedside Spittoon (Pikadani)

Stout and charming early 20th-century solid-cast heavy brass bedside spittoon with compressed globular reservoir, wide flared sloping funnel mouth, and weighted stable base (Height 5 inches / 12.7 cm, Weight ~520 grams)
Charming, stout, and delightfully compact century-old authentic brass bedside spittoon (known across Odia village tradition as Golaka Pikadani, Lota Pikadana, or Pana Phika Dani), cast circa early 20th century in heavy solid brass metal. Specifically designed with a low center of gravity to prevent accidental tipping or spills when placed beside low rope beds (charpoys / khatia) or on earthen sleeping mats, this vessel features a compressed, plump globular reservoir (kalash/lota form) seamlessly joined via a short concave neck to an expansive, wide sloping dished funnel mouth rim. The weighted flat base ensures rock-solid stability even on uneven rural bedroom floors. Historically kept bedside by village women and elder ladies to conveniently receive spent paan droplets and betel juice during evening conversations and rest. With the disappearance of traditional leisurely paan-chewing culture and the displacement of heavy artisanal brassware by modern industrial vessels, intact authentic bedside spittoons of this heavy, charming proportions are exceedingly scarce folk antiquities. Preserved in remarkable museum-grade condition with a mellow silvery-golden aged patina and authentic domestic handling polish.
