Century-Old Serrated-Rim Brass Ladies' Bedside Spittoon (Pikadani)
Delicate early 20th-century solid-cast brass ladies' bedside spittoon with saw-tooth serrated pie-crust rim, waisted hourglass neck, and diagonal rope-twist spiral gadrooning (Height 5 inches / 12.7 cm)
Charming and exceptionally rare century-old authentic brass ladies' bedside spittoon (known in Odia folk heritage as Zenana Pikadani or Pana Phika Dani), cast circa early 20th century in solid brass. Distinctively proportioned in a petite and graceful 5-inch (12.7 cm) stature, this vessel was commissioned specifically for ladies' private bedchambers (Antahpura / Zenana) and placed bedside upon woven charpoys or low wooden stools. The most striking artistic hallmark is its expansive dished funnel mouth rim, completely bordered by a decorative saw-tooth serrated (crenellated pie-crust) perimeter chiseled by hand. The flared upper bowl descends gracefully into a narrow waisted middle collar, flanked above and below by diagonal rope-twist spiral gadrooned relief friezes that mirror traditional metal chasing of the period. Supported by a flared, spreading bell-shaped pedestal foot for steadfast stability. With the complete cessation of traditional aristocratic paan customs and manual domestic brassware production, intact authentic ladies' serrated-rim pikadanis are extinct and exceedingly rare collectibles. Preserved in museum-grade condition with a warm, natural aged golden-olive patina, original hand-tooling file marks, and gentle historic handling polish.
