Century-Old Diamond-Faceted Baluster Brass Bedside Spittoon (Pikadani)
Charming early 20th-century slender baluster-form solid brass ladies' bedside spittoon with flared trumpet funnel rim, ringed columnar neck, and relief diamond-lozenge faceted knop (Height 7 inches / 17.8 cm, Weight ~450 grams)
Elegant and exceedingly charming century-old authentic brass bedside spittoon (known in regional Odia domestic heritage as Pikadani, Pikadana, or Pana Phika Dani), cast circa early 20th century in solid heavy brass. Designed in a graceful, slender architectural baluster / goblet silhouette, this vessel was traditionally kept bedside by village women upon low bedside stools or woven charpoys to receive spent betel juice (paan pika) during evening relaxation and bedtime routines. Rising from a flared stepped pedestal foot with concentric lathe-turned moldings, the vessel features an extraordinary central spherical knop / boss deeply carved with a band of diamond-shaped lozenge facets (Hira-chita relief pattern) creating an alluring interplay of light and shadow. Above the faceted knop, a slender ring-turned columnar neck flares outward into an expansive, dished trumpet funnel mouth finished with a smooth, rounded rolled rim designed to prevent splashing. An extinct and vanishing domestic folk metalcraft heirloom from the golden era of traditional leisurely paan etiquette. Preserved in museum-grade antique condition with authentic warm brass patination, subtle verdigris traces in the geometric facet recesses, and natural domestic handling polish.
