Archive Ref: GNMC-ART-053

Century-Old Auspicious Coconut-Form Brass Kerosene Lamp (Nadia Dibi)

Rare early 20th-century spherical coconut-form solid brass village kerosene lamp with scrolled wick-snuffer spout, finger loop handle, and flared pedestal foot (Diameter 3.5 inches / 9 cm, Height 4 inches / 10 cm)
Authentic century-old traditional folk lighting antiquity modeled in the organic form of an auspicious coconut (known in Odia village culture as Nadia Dibi or Sriphala Dibia), cast circa early 20th century in rural Odisha. Cast in solid heavy brass, this charming domestic lamp features a plump, spherical oblate reservoir replicating the natural contours of a de-husked coconut, rising gracefully to an upright cylindrical bottleneck collar. The collar is fitted with a specialized brass burner cap supporting an externally-threaded vertical wick nozzle and an integral scrolled wick-adjuster snuffer arm with a delicate curled terminal. A stout curved loop finger handle accented by an arched volute thumb-rest is brazed to the font shoulder for secure carriage through dark village verandas and courtyard corridors. Supported by a flared splayed pedestal foot designed for steadfast domestic placement upon prayer alcoves, ledger tables, or earthen window sills. Dimensions: Diameter 3.5 inches (9 cm); Height 4 inches (10 cm). Extinct from daily rural life since the advent of modern domestic power, surviving examples with intact burner caps and authentic historic hand-filing marks are rare and cherished folk metalcraft heirlooms. Preserved in remarkable antique condition with natural golden-olive aged patina and subtle domestic wear.
