Century-Old Aristocratic Brass Wheeled Dhinki Toy (Mechanical Rice Husker)
Exceedingly rare early 20th-century functional brass mechanical folk toy replicating the traditional pedal-operated paddy rice husker (Dhinki), commissioned by Zamindars / Jamidars as gifts for grandchildren (Length 4.5 inches / 11 cm, Height 2 inches / 5 cm)
Charming and exceptionally rare century-old authentic miniature brass mechanical folk toy replicating the traditional rural pedal-operated rice husker, known in Odisha and Bengal as "Dhinki" (or Dhenki). Cast in solid brass circa early 20th century in Odisha. In historic aristocratic society, wealthy zamindars (jamidars) and agrarian landed gentry frequently commissioned master village braziers and metalsmiths to fabricate miniature fully-operational agricultural and domestic mechanical toys as heirloom gifts for their children and grandchildren. This captivating model features a solid rectangular brass chassis block hollowed with two circular concave mortar wells, mounted upon four concentric-spiral grooved disc wheels secured on cotter-pin wire axles, enabling the entire unit to be rolled across palace verandas. An upright central fulcrum post supports an articulated, balanced lever beam on a horizontal pivot pin; the forward end is fitted with a vertical drop-pestle peg that descends accurately into the front mortar basin when the opposite pedal beam is pressed and released. Symbolizing rural agrarian abundance, the divine grace of Goddess Lakshmi (presiding deity of paddy and grain), and joyous childhood play, surviving examples of functional antique brass folk toys with intact wheels and articulated pivot mechanisms are exceedingly uncommon collectors' treasures. Preserved in remarkable original condition with authentic aged olive-brass patination and gentle antique play wear.
