150-Year-Old Rare Heavy Cast Brass Tribal Anklets (Pair - Khagura / Goda Khadu)

Authentic 150-year-old museum-grade pair of rare and uncommon tribal brass anklets (known in regional ethnographic traditions as Khagura, Banka Khadu, or Goda Pahuda), cast circa mid-19th century in the highland tribal regions of Odisha and the Eastern Ghats. Unlike lightweight sheet-brass bridal jewelry, this distinguished pair is cast in thick, substantial solid brass, imparting considerable weight and enduring strength. The design features an elongated ergonomic oval silhouette with contoured inner edges to fit comfortably over the heel and ankle. The outer circumference is articulated with four prominent raised relief features: bulbous spherical/fluted bosses at the apex and base, each flanked by raised ring collars and grooved sleeves, complemented by matching lateral knuckle bosses on either flank. Traditionally worn by senior tribal women and matriarchs during important clan ceremonies, ancestral rituals, and seasonal festivals, these heavy anklets served simultaneously as protective amulets, signs of matrilineal authority, and portable generational wealth. Now completely obsolete and out of practice in modern times, surviving pairs in such pristine, unaltered antique condition are extraordinarily scarce. Preserved with a rich, dark historic olive-bronze patina, authentic surface wear, and subtle handling polish.
