150-Year-Old Heavy Stout Channeled Brass Tribal Anklets (Pair - Banka Khadu)
Archive Ref: GNMC-ART-050

150-Year-Old Heavy Stout Channeled Brass Tribal Anklets (Pair - Banka Khadu)

Exceedingly stout 150-year-old solid-cast brass tribal anklet pair with deep longitudinal concave channel and flared knop terminals (Weight 1,120 grams)
Authentic 150-year-old museum-grade pair of rare, heavy, and stout tribal brass anklets (known regionally as Banka Khadu or Pahari Ghoda Khadu), cast circa mid-19th century in the tribal forest tracts of Odisha and Eastern India. Exhibiting a robust and stout solid-brass construction, this matched pair is distinguished by its deep longitudinal perimeter channel flanked by twin raised rounded torus borders, engineered for monumental rigidity and substantial grounding weight. Formed into an elongated ergonomic contour with an arched inner profile tailored to fit securely around the lower leg and ankle joint, the anklets feature authentic hand-brazed terminal joints and subtle transverse chiseling. In historic tribal societies, heavy and stout anklets of this caliber were worn by tribal women as protective talismans against wild terrain and spiritual perils, while signifying lineage status, marriage solemnity, and tangible familial wealth. Now completely extinct and no longer produced or worn in practice, intact surviving pairs in unblemished antique condition are exceptionally rare ethnographic treasures. Preserved with a rich, dark historic olive-charcoal patina and natural surface wear.
